Muhurat Trading 2026

What it is, what it isn’t, and whether a beginner should take part

reading time · 8 minutes     |     UPDATED 23 OCTOBER 2026

Once a year, Dalal Street opens on a day it would normally rest. On Sunday, 8 November 2026, the NSE and BSE hold a special Diwali session — a tradition older than most investors’ careers. For first-timers, the question is simple: is it a golden opportunity, or a beautiful ritual best enjoyed with a small, careful step?

★  key takeaways  ★

★ It is real trading. Orders are live, trades settle normally, and losses are as real as gains.

★ The track record is gentle, not guaranteed. Eight of the last ten sessions closed higher, mostly by well under 1%.

★ Beginners can join — as a small, symbolic, well-prepared start to a long-term plan, never as a shortcut to profit.

01   What Is Muhurat Trading?

‘Muhurat’ simply means an auspicious moment. In the Indian market, Muhurat trading is a special, short session held on the day of Diwali Laxmi Pujan to mark the beginning of the new Samvat — the traditional Hindu calendar year. The BSE began the custom in 1957, and the NSE followed in 1992.

For generations, business families have used the occasion to worship Goddess Lakshmi, open fresh account books and place a small, symbolic first trade — a belief that beginning the year with an auspicious investment invites prosperity. Over time, a trader’s ritual has turned into a mainstream retail event.

three things to remember

◆ Symbolic in spirit. The meaning is cultural; the market itself does not treat the day as special.

◆ Real in money. Every order is live — profits and losses are yours.

◆ Short in time. A compressed window means prices can move quickly on thin activity.

Muhurat trading is a celebration first — and a profit strategy a very distant second.

02   Muhurat Trading 2026 Timings

This year’s session lands on a Sunday afternoon rather than the traditional evening slot, continuing the afternoon timing first seen in 2025. The exchanges have notified an identical equity schedule.

phase

time (IST)

what it means for you

Orders are collected and the opening price is discovered.

2:15 – 2:17 PM

Pre-open orders are matched and trades confirmed; buffer follows till 2:20 PM.

Normal, continuous trading. Stocks in the closing-auction group close at 3:15 PM.

3:20 – 3:30 PM

Post-close session

3:50 – 4:00 PM

Timings are as notified by the exchanges. Re-confirm inside your broker app on the day — and note that markets stay shut on Tuesday, 10 November.

03   What Does The Track Record Say?

Across the ten sessions from 2016 to 2025, the Nifty 50 and Sensex both finished in the green eight times and in the red twice. The headline looks encouraging — until you look at the size of the moves.

8 of 10

sessions closed higher

+0.87%

best session (2022)

−0.63%

weakest session (2017)

➤ Gains are small. Most sessions moved well under 1% — an average gain of roughly 0.4% in recent years.

➤ Green can hide a slide. In 2025 the Nifty closed just 0.10% above the previous close, yet finished below its own opening level that day.

➤ It is not a forecast. A cheerful Muhurat close has never been a dependable signal for the year ahead.

SO WHAT?  Treat the data as a mood indicator, not a money-making system.

04   Costs, Segments & What You Can Trade

A special day does not come with a special price list — or special rules. Here is what a first-timer should know before clicking ‘buy’.

what it costs

◆ Charged like any other day. Brokerage, securities transaction tax and other statutory charges apply as usual. Brokerage differs from broker to broker, so check your own plan.

◆ Small orders feel fees more. A flat per-order charge takes a bigger bite out of a token trade than a large one.

◆ Settlement is normal. Trades create settlement obligations, and intraday positions you do not close are squared off by your broker as on any other day.

which segments open

Beyond the equity market, the exchanges have also notified Muhurat windows for equity derivatives, currency derivatives and commodity derivatives, each with slightly different closing times. For beginners the advice is simple: stay with plain shares or ETFs — derivatives add leverage, and a short festive session is a poor place to learn it.

mutual funds & etfs on 8 november

Shares & ETFs

Trade live during the notified session windows, like any other trading day.

Mutual fund lump sum

An order placed on Sunday is processed on the next business day. There is no special Diwali NAV.

SIP due that day

Processed on the next business day as per the fund house; the NAV follows that day.

05   So, Should Beginners Take Part?

THE HONEST ANSWER:  yes — but only as a small, symbolic, well-prepared step.

Nothing stops a beginner from joining. Use this quick test:

Reasons to say yes

✔ Your demat and trading account is active and KYC is complete.

✔ You will invest a token amount you won’t need for years.

✔ You want to begin a long-term habit on a meaningful day.

✔ You see it as a learning experience, not a profit target.

Reasons to wait

✘ You are hoping for quick or guaranteed gains.

✘ You plan to borrow money or use leverage.

✘ The money is meant for rent, emergencies or near-term goals.

✘ You are acting on social-media or messaging-group tips.

06   The Beginner’s Muhurat Playbook

Seven simple moves that keep the day joyful and the risk small.

1 Get ready early.  Complete KYC, link your bank account and keep funds in place before 8 November — don’t scramble on the day.

2 Set a token budget.  Choose an amount small enough that a bad session will not change your month.

3 Choose quality over excitement.  Broad index-based options or well-established companies you understand beat unknown names chasing the day’s buzz.

4 Use limit orders.  In a short, sometimes jumpy session, a limit order keeps you in charge of your price. Understand the pre-open rules before you place anything.

5 Skip leverage and derivatives.  A first-time festive trade is not the moment to experiment with borrowed money.

6 Think in years, not minutes.  Treat the trade as step one of a regular, long-term plan.

7 Review the next day.  Note what you learned about orders, prices and your own emotions — that lesson is the real return.

five mistakes to avoid

✘ Chasing tips from social media or messaging groups.

✘ Buying only because it feels auspicious without understanding the company or fund.

✘ Investing more than you can afford to lose.

✘ Using market orders on thinly traded stocks, where the price you get can surprise you.

✘ Treating derivatives as a festive lottery ticket.

07   Myths vs Facts

MYTH  “Muhurat trades are guaranteed to make money.”

FACT  Past gains were small, and two of the last ten sessions closed lower.

MYTH  “It’s only symbolic, so it doesn’t count.”

FACT  Orders are live and trades settle like any other trading day.

MYTH  “A green Muhurat means a green year.”

FACT  The session reflects sentiment on one afternoon; it is not a forecast.

MYTH  “Only experts should participate.”

FACT  Anyone with a ready demat account can — preparation matters more than experience.

08   Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Is Muhurat trading safe for beginners?

It carries the same market risk as any other session. Safety comes from your choices: a small amount, quality investments and no borrowed money.

Q.  Can I both buy and sell?

Yes. Normal buying and selling is available within the notified windows, and every trade is real.

Q.  Do I need a special account?

No. Your regular demat and trading account works, provided your KYC is complete and funds or shares are in place.

Q.  Will I make a profit?

There is no guarantee. Eight of the last ten sessions closed higher, mostly by small margins, and two closed lower.

Q.  Are charges higher on Muhurat day?

No. Trades are charged like any other day; what you pay depends on your broker’s plan.

Q.  Can I invest in mutual funds that day?

You can place an order, but it is processed on the next business day and no special NAV applies. ETFs, however, trade like shares during the session.

Q.  What if I miss the session?

You lose nothing but the symbolism. Markets reopen for regular trading on Monday, 9 November, and the same long-term plan works on any day.

09   The Final Word

Go for the tradition, keep the amount small, and let the real returns come from patience.
