The BH number plate (Bharat Series) is a special vehicle registration system introduced by the Government of India in 2021. Its main purpose is to allow seamless vehicle transfer across Indian states without the need for re-registration. This is especially useful for people in transferable jobs like government employees, defence personnel, and those working in private companies with offices in multiple states.
Format Example: 21 BH 1234 AA
21 – Year of registration
BH – Bharat Series code
1234 – Random number
AA – Random letters
BH series plates are valid across all Indian states.
Vehicle owners do not need to re-register their vehicle when moving to a new state.
Road tax is paid in blocks of 2 years instead of a one-time 15-year tax.
After 14 years, tax is paid annually.
To apply for a BH number plate, you must belong to one of the following categories:
Central Government employees
State Government employees
Defence personnel
Private sector employees whose company has offices in four or more states/UTs
You must provide:
Valid employment certificate or ID
Address proof
PAN or Aadhaar
Inform your vehicle dealer that you want to apply for a BH number plate.
Submit your documents (employment proof, ID, address).
Dealer applies via the Vahan portal.
Pay the calculated road tax for 2 years.
Vehicle is registered and BH number plate issued.
As of now, BH plate registration is mostly limited to new vehicles.
Some states may allow conversion for existing vehicles; check with your local RTO.
Road tax is based on the ex-showroom price of the vehicle and paid every 2 years:
| Ex-Showroom Price | Petrol Vehicles | Diesel Vehicles | Electric Vehicles |
| < ₹10 lakh | 8% | 10% | 9% |
| ₹10-20 lakh | 10% | 12% | 11% |
| > ₹20 lakh | 12% | 14% | 13% |
An additional 2% surcharge for diesel vehicles may apply.
After 14 years, road tax is charged annually.
As of 2025, many states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana have adopted the BH series. However, not all states are fully integrated.
Suggestion: Always check with your dealer or local RTO before planning for a BH plate.
Verify Eligibility: Double-check if your organization qualifies. Get an employment certificate or Form 60 signed by HR.
Check State Readiness: Confirm if your state allows BH plate issuance, especially if you're applying for a used vehicle.
Consider Long-term Costs: If you’re staying in one state long-term, traditional 15-year registration may be cheaper.
Understand Resale Limitations: BH vehicles can only be transferred to other eligible BH applicants. Selling to others requires conversion.
Use the Vahan Portal: Track your application and renew your road tax online conveniently.
Only for Private Vehicles: BH is not applicable to commercial or transport vehicles.
| Feature | BH Number Plate | Regular Number Plate |
| Valid Across India | Yes | No (re-registration needed) |
| Tax Payment | Every 2 years | One-time (15 years) |
| Resale Limitations | Can sell only to BH-eligible | Can sell to anyone |
| Ideal For | Transferable job holders | Permanent residents |
| Online Process | Fully online via Vahan portal | May involve manual RTO work |
Suppose you buy a petrol car worth ₹8 lakh:
Road Tax (BH series): 8% of ₹8 lakh = ₹64,000 (every 2 years)
Over 14 years: 7 x ₹64,000 = ₹448,000
Regular Registration: One-time tax of ₹120,000 (approx. for 15 years)
If you move frequently, BH is more convenient.
If you stay put, regular registration might save money.
The BH series number plate is a progressive step toward ease of mobility for working professionals in India. While it offers flexibility and convenience, it comes with conditions and cost implications. Evaluate your career mobility, state implementation, and resale plans before opting for a BH plate.
Tip: Always keep a digital copy of your application and tax receipt for future reference.
